Pumpkin Hat with Matching Diaper Cover Newborn Set

It's probably a good thing that I didn't know how to crochet when my kids were babies because I would have made all kinds of cute and crazy outfits for them. But just because I don't have babies anymore doesn't mean I don't enjoy making things for babies.

Fall is one of my favorites times of the year. This pumpkin hat and matching diaper cover would look nothing short of adorable on any baby!

This hat will fit most newborns, but the diaper cover will fit most babies up to 9 months.

Supplies

H-hook
Worsted yarn - shown Red Heart Pumpkin, Vanna's Choice Fern
3/4 - 1 inch orange button
Tapestry needle for weaving in ends

Stem

With green
Rnd 1: 6 sc into a magic ring, join to first stitch and ch. 1
*If you don't know how to do a magic ring, you can start by chaining 2 and crocheting 6 sc into the second chain from the hook
Rnd 2: In BLO, sc in each stitch around (6)

*For the rest of the stem, you will work in continuous rounds. I find it helpful to use a stitch marker or a small piece of yarn in a contrasting color to mark the beginning of each round

Rnds 3-5: Sc around (6).  Join with a slip stitch to the next stitch at the end of round 5.

* From now on you will join each round. The beginning chain does NOT count as a stitch

Hat

Rnd 1: Ch. 2, 2 dc in each stitch around. Join orange in the last stitch (12)

Rnd 2: Ch. 2, dc in the same stitch as the join, fpdc around the post of the same stitch, * dc in next stitch, fpdc around the post of the same stitch *, repeat from  * to * around, join (24)

Rnd 3: Ch. 2, 2 dc in the same stitch as the join, fpdc around the fpdc in the previous round, * 2 dc in next stitch, fpdc around the fpdc in the previous round *, repeat from  * to * around, join (36)

Rnd 4: Ch. 2, 2 dc in the same stitch as the join, dc in next, fpdc around the fpdc in the previous round, * 2 dc in next stitch, dc in next, fpdc around the fpdc in the previous round *, repeat from  * to * around, join (48)

Rnd 5: Ch. 2, dc in the same stitch as the join and in the next 2, fpdc around the fpdc in the previous round. * Dc in the next 3, fpdc around the fpdc in the previous round *, repeat from * to * around, join (48)

Rnds 6-11: Repeat round 5

*You should have 12 fpdc stitches in each round

Rnd 12: Ch. 1, sc around, join and fasten off yarn

Vines

With green
Chain an odd number (I suggest 21 or less)
Beginning in the second chain from the hook, * 2 sc in the next, sc in the next *, repeat to the end and fasten off leaving a tail long enough to be able to sew the vine to the hat at the base of the stem.

Make as many as you want and as long or short as you want!

Diaper cover

With orange
Ch. 55
Row 1: SC in the 2nd chain from the hook and in the next 53 (54)
Row 2: Ch 2, DC in each stitch across (54)
Row 3: Ch 1, SC in each stitch across (54)
Row 4: SS in next 16, Ch 2, DC in same stitch and in next 23

Rows 5-8: Ch 2, DC across (24)

Row 9: Ch 2, DC2TOG, DC in next 20, DC2TOG (22)
Row 10: Ch 2, DC2TOG, DC in next 18, DC2TOG (20)
Row 11: Ch 2, DC2TOG, DC in next 16, DC2TOG (18)
Row 12: Ch 2, DC2TOG, DC in next 14, DC2TOG (16)
Row 13: Ch 2, DC2TOG, DC in next 12, DC2TOG (14)

Rows 14-18: Ch 2, DC across (14)

Row 19: 2 DC in the first stitch, DC in next 12, 2 DC in last stitch (16)

Row 20-22: Ch 2, DC across (16), fasten off

Join green in the last DC of row 22.

Ch 1, SC around placing 2 SC in each corner. Join to first SC, fasten off.

Sew your button in the middle on the front of the cover. The button will fit through any double crochet stitch in the strap. This makes the cover easy to adjust for babies of almost any size up to approximately 9 months of age. For babies 3 months and under, the straps can be overlapped and easily buttoned to ensure a good fit.

I take great pride in my work. I ask that you do not redistribute or sell this pattern or modify it in any way and claim as you own. Please feel free to make as many as you want for your own personal use or to sell at craft fairs, on your own personal website or on marketplace websites, such as Etsy. 2. How could I make this for a 12 month old? Could i repeat more rounds or would I need to change something at the beginning of the pattern? I have been looking for a pattern that is easy for me to understand everywhere and I really like this one. If you could help, I would greatly appreciate it.

    1. Hi! For the hat I would suggest one more increase round (2 dc in next stitch, dc in next 2, fpdc around the fpdc in the previous round) and one more round of dc at the end. For the diaper cover, you could add another row or 2 to make it longer. Depending on the baby, add a few more stitches on the strap. I hope this helps!
